Hong Kong police have fired a water cannon at protesters gathering to demonstrate against Beijing's newly imposed security legislation.

Tensions were high a day after China imposed a sweeping security law on the city, a historic move decried by many Western governments as an unprecedented assault on the finance hub's liberties and autonomy.

Police said a man with a Hong Kong independence flag was the first to be arrested under the new law, confirming that certain political views and symbols had become illegal overnight.
