Speech therapy is an allied branch of health sciences related to the disorder of speech, voice, and language of a person. Simply, we can say that :
“Speech therapy deals with the evaluation and treatment of speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.”
A person who has a degree or diploma in speech therapy is called a speech therapists, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) or speech pathologists.
What do they do?
A speech therapist works with people who have difficulty speaking, forming words or sounds, or who are recovering from injury, illness or trauma that has affected their ability to speak. That is they deal with kids or children who have delayed speeches during childhood, stammering, stuttering and also work with old people/ grown-ups who may have lost their ability to communicate due to medical reasons such s strokes, accidents, removal of larynx (because of cancer). In short, speech therapists job includes working with people who stammer, stutter and lisp by teaching them vocal exercises to improve diction and articulation. They also teach sign language to those who are completely incapable of speech.
Scope in speech therapy
Speech therapy and audiology have become promising career options in recent times. There are various sectors for different courses under the speech therapy profession which you can join according to your course. One can work as a doctor or as other job roles in this field not in India but also in abroad. You can also work in the given sectors such as clinics, district disabilities rehabilitation centers, rural health centers, speech and hearing centers, etc.

How to become a speech therapist?
To be eligible for these courses, you need to have a background in science. One can become speech therapist after earning per-requisite degree in related field. Education in speech therapy is provided t bachelor and master level.
Courses you can pursue:
Master of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (MASLP) - 2 years
Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (BASLP) - 4 years
Diploma in Hearing, Language & Speech (DHLS) - 1 year
Post Graduate Certificate Course in Auditory Verbal Therapy (PGCAVT) - 6 months

Post graduates in audiology & speech language pathology can work as lecturers in medical colleges.
Graduates in in audiology & speech language pathology can practice in hospitals in the department of ENT, pediatrics, neurology, child guidance center, etc. They can also practice as independent audiologists.
Those who have a doctoral degree in the above field can be part of Human Resource Development at different training & research centers.
Diploma holders can assist audiologists and speech language pathologists in schools of hearing impairment, mental retardation etc.
After acquiring a degree in relevant field, speech therapists can also open their own clinic.
In India speech therapists earns the salary of around Rs. lakhs to 3 lakhs per annum. With the year of experience, salary increases. Private hospitals offer better salary as compared to government hospitals.
In abroad, the earnings of speech therapist ranges from $52,000 to $80,000 per annum.
